The central character, Adam Young, a forty-six-year-old management consultant, is haunted by happy memories of his life with Grace, his wife who died fifteen months before the story begins.

His children are overseas- his life is empty- he lacks motivation and sits in his Melbourne office bathed in gloom. The telephone rings and he finds himself absorbed in the problems of a failing iron ore miner in the hot dry Pilbara in the north west of Western Australia. The purpose of the project he sells is to secure a vast improvement in performance for the client, as appalling industrial relations have reduced profitability to such an extent that the very survival of the operation is at risk.

Strategy development is followed by implementation support, during which he meets Henny, a 300 tonne haul truck driver who helps him to climb out of his emotional void. A long strike over the availability of Raspberry Pavlovas on Public Holidays forms the public face of a dispute which is in reality much more complex.

The challenge this poses for Nick Cantina, the President and Chief Executive of the miner, is daunting but he overcomes it and rises to the occasion, becoming a real leader rather than a faceless office-bound manager. Adams next major assignment is in a New Zealand paper mill plagued by an endless series of minor disputes leading to plunging profits. The mill is situated in the deeply rural volcanic heart of the North Island of New Zealand which is ideal for a wide range of outdoor activities. The team take advantage of this and, during a holiday weekend, they tramp for two days from the Desert Road to Lake Taupo through the Tongariro National Park.

Later, they climb Mount Tarawera with its twenty kilometre long crater and fantastic views of Lake Tarawera and the North Islands volcanic region. Interludes in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland provide a stark contrast to life in Outback Australia and rural New Zealand, while in England, Durham, with its magnificent cathedral high above the River Wear, offers a glimpse of a very different way of life. In both projects the inevitable personal tensions between and within the various groups involved in industrial relations: owners- managers- employees- unions, their officials, shop stewards and members- and consultants cause problems which threaten success.

Adam is helped and hindered by the wide range of cultures, Australian, New Australian, Maori, Pakeha and British, as they try to sort out their clients problems as well as their private lives- both are complex.
